2015 Sustainability Report

Sustainable Products

Environmental stewardship has driven our research and development portfolio for more than a century. That rich history has embedded into our DNA the commitment to innovate products and processes that provide environmental and other sustainability benefits to our customers.

In 2012, we set a goal to have 30 percent of our total sales derived from sustainable products by 2020. We achieved that goal in 2015, five years ahead of schedule. Confident in the abilities and dedication of our people, we revised the goal in early 2016 to have sustainable products and processes comprising 40 percent of our total sales by 2020.

Our coatings, materials and technologies reduce corrosion, extending the life of our customers’ products. We also help our customers reduce energy usage and emissions, protect their employees and minimize waste and water consumption through the use of our products.

Sustainable product innovation is more than a business strategy at PPG. It is a commitment to the environment, our customers and our people.

JOHNSTONE'S TRADE® products earn environmental impact certification

Nine Johnstone’s Trade products received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verification from BRE Global in 2015.  Johnstone’s Trade was the first decorative coating manufacturer to receive the certification, which complies with the European Standard EN 15804. An EPD standardizes the full environmental impact of a product through its lifespan, from raw materials and manufacturing to application, use and disposal. It also gives specifiers and architects peace of mind that they are specifying products that are consistent with BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) environmental standards.

Heat-management system inspired by an eggplant

A new PPG coatings technology is helping commercial aircraft save energy on air conditioning by behaving more like an eggplant. The novel heat-management system is based on infrared-transparent stainers that allow solar heat to pass through topcoat pigments to a white primer coat, which reflects the heat away from the aircraft. An eggplant uses much the same trick to prevent its dark skin from getting so hot that the white interior bakes before it even reaches the oven. The skin of an aircraft painted with the new system remains as much as 25 degrees F (4 degrees C) cooler, while interior cabin temperatures are reduced five to seven degrees F.

Single-component PPG ONE coatings cut waste, emissions

Our new AMERCOAT® ONE epoxy, PSX® ONE polysiloxane and SIGMADUR® ONE urethane coatings are single-component products that offer the protection and durability of their two-component competitors but with longer pot life. This means the containers can be reopened and reused, significantly reducing wasted coating and disposal costs. Since each product is pre-packaged in a single can, there are fewer cans to ship and dispose of compared to two-component systems. This reduces emissions associated with transportation and cuts the number of discarded cans by half. PSX ONE coating is also a no-isocyanate product and the only low-VOC coating of its kind.

Switch to recyclable pallets reduces GHG emissions, energy demand

Partnering with customer RM2 Composites, our Fiber Glass business is shifting from disposable wooden pallets to recyclable composite pallets reinforced with PPG fiber glass for shipping some finished goods. According to an independent life cycle analysis, these recyclable composite pallets reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 24 percent, global warming potential by 21 percent and primary energy demand by 50 percent compared to standard disposable wooden pallets.

PERFORMALOC™ advanced productivity coatings can save energy, increase throughput

Featuring a proprietary combination of low-volatile organic compound resins that cure fast and hard, Performaloc advanced productivity coatings eliminate the need for baking or force-drying metal parts. The coatings can reduce energy costs, increase production throughput and yield lower labor costs for original equipment manufacturers that coat metal parts.

Paint + vegetables = enVie wall paints

Our enVie bio-based wall paints use a renewable vegetable binder and no petrochemical resins. To preserve natural resources, the paint is available in a recyclable 0.5 liter (one pint) metal can. enVie wall paints have very low VOC emissions and are rated A+ for indoor air quality in the French classification.

New conditioner extends bath life, reduces sludge, improves corrosion performance

The VERSABOND™ pretreatment system improves the corrosion-resistance of mixed-metal substrates while enabling manufacturers to realize the environmental and energy-saving benefits of extended bath life, reduced sludge and lower processing temperatures. Depending on the composition of the metal mix, the Versabond pretreatment system may process at temperatures up to 20 percent lower than those required for conventional zinc-phosphate formulations. It also extends average bath life from two weeks to eight weeks and generates 30 to 50 percent less sludge, resulting in less waste, lower energy consumption and fewer maintenance demands.

BPA-NI coatings first to be approved for food-packing applications

Part of PPG’s new generation of food-can coatings, NUTRISHIELD™ SOLISTA™ internal protective spray coatings are the first Bisphenol A non-intent (with no BPA intentionally added) high-performance solutions for the food-can industry approved to pack various food products, including ready meals, soups and infant foods. The coatings, which are for drawn and wall-ironed food cans, comply with North American and European regulations and are food-contact compliant as certified by independent institutes.

Metal-free catalyst technology provides environmental, performance advantages

Originally formulated to achieve REACH compliance in Europe, POWERCRON ADVANTEDGE™ electrocoat is formulated with a proprietary metal-free catalyst that eliminates the need for dibutyl tin and other scarce or restricted heavy metals as a catalyzing agent. Additional performance advantages include cure temperatures as low as 320 degrees F (160 degrees C) to reduce energy use and related carbon emissions, excellent workability, a smooth film appearance, enhanced throwpower and excellent corrosion resistance.

RIPOLIN® Attitude wall paint absorbs formaldehyde

Launched in January 2015, our Ripolin Attitude wall paints absorb formaldehyde and decrease its concentration within a room. The paint contains scavenging substances that react with formaldehyde to convert it to a new and harmless molecule, and the reaction is irreversible. Ripolin Attitude wall paints have very low VOC emissions and are rated A+ for indoor air quality in the French classification.

Lead Commitment

We do not use lead as an ingredient in our consumer paints and coatings anywhere in the world, and we have no plans to develop new products with lead. In fact, we have proactively eliminated lead from new formulations for a number of years.

As part of our integration process for acquired companies, we develop plans to eliminate lead from products that become part of our portfolio. A small number of our non-consumer products currently include lead, solely to meet the unique specifications of certain customers.

In 2015, we established a goal to eliminate lead from remaining non-consumer coatings formulations by 2020. We plan to report on our progress in eliminating lead from this limited number of formulations in our annual corporate sustainability report, beginning with the 2016 report.
